FAQ

Mental Health is not just the absence of mental illness. The World Health Organization describes mental health as "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community".

A psychiatrist is a qualified medial doctor who has specialised in the area of mental illness. A psychiatrist assesses, diagnoses, treats and aims to prevent mental illness and emotional disturbance.

Psychiatrists are medically trained to treat mental health issues. Sometimes physical illness or biological imbalances can trigger mental illness and their medical background allows them to order certain tests and prescribe medications. Psychologists tend to focus on the psychological mechanisms of the illness.

As this is a specialist medical service all patients require a referral from their GP or from another medical specialist in order to be eligible for a Medicare rebate. GP referrals must be renewed every twelve months, whilst a referral from another medical specialist is only valid for three months. Our friendly receptionists will endeavor to remind you when your referral is about to expire, however, it is up to the patient to obtain a valid referral.
